£6 is lost every second through plastic card fraud in the UK

That's £189.4 million annually and £50.6 million of that is through counterfeit cards alone!

Credit card fraud is becoming increasingly sophisticated, especially counterfeit cards.

You can carry out a number of quick and simple checks to help establish if the card being offered for payment is genuine or counterfeit.

 The three-dimensional hologram should have depth when the card is tilted back and forth.
 The Visa hologram is a dove on a clear background.
 The MasterCard hologram has two interconnecting world globes with the word MasterCard repeated behind them.
 If you are using an electronic terminal, ensure the account number printed on the receipt copy matches the embossed account number on the card. (Sometimes, you may find only the last four digits of the account number will be shown on the receipt)
 Ensure the signature strip has not been tampered with
 Check the cardholder's signature matches the receipt/voucher
 Check that the title and gender e.g. Mr, Miss etc. are appropriate to the presenter
